Helen Sophia Biography
Since her early age, Helen has always excelled in art classes. Her Kindergarden teacher recognized her dancing and acting talents and she appointed Helen to be the main character in one of the school’s performance.
Helen was encouraged to join a ballet class which was popular at that time and thus she joined the only ballet school available in Semarang, under tutelage of Ms Tjipto Bagio or so called Mevrow The (in Dutch means: Maddame The).
Mevrow The saw that Helen was a very talented ballerina, and entrusted her to be her assistant between 1965 to 1967. Her career as a ballet teacher thus began when she was only at a young age of twelve years old. For personal reason, Mevrow The decided to leave her school in 1968 and asked Helen to continue her school.
Due to her young age and little experience, many parents decided not to continue their children’s dancing lessons. The school lost a large number of students that year. However, Helen was very persistent and devoted to her work. She examplified excellence in dancing as well as teaching and her career gradually began to take off. In-between teaching and dancing, Helen continued to update her skills and knowledge by participating in International RAD teachers’ course and learning from various senior ballerinas, such as Dewi Rani, Joan Campbell, Jean Wong, Jean Bedells, Cynthia Too, dan Lily Lan.
Helen is also a regular examiner for Baelamos Dance school in Jogjakarta and was invited to teach choregraphy and art classes in a local bible college (Sekolah Tinggi Theologi Abdie Ungaran) as a guest lecturer.
Apart from teaching and dancing, Helen finds her passion in acting as well. She joined Cristopherus Foundation (a christian organization) to produce christian movies as both assistant director and actress, for example : Tiada Jalan Lain, Jerat Maut, Siapa Yang Terkutuk, and Aborsi.
Helen’s career would never be complete without the support of her family.
